Unlocking Opportunities in Carbon Farming & Natural Capital - Workshop Summary
Workshop 1 | Held: 9th April 2025 | Location: MIG Lodge, Mingenew WA 6522
MIG recently hosted the first of three workshops in the GGA Carbon Outreach Series, drawing a strong mix of growers and carbon industry representatives to explore the evolving landscape of carbon farming and natural capital investment. The session featured expert speakers who provided a practical introduction to carbon methods, markets, and on-farm opportunities: This first session laid the groundwork for growers looking to understand and engage with carbon and natural capital opportunities.
Kelly Pang (Outback Carbon) outlined current carbon farming options in WA, with a focus on reforestation methods, low-risk participation pathways, and the roles of proponents and developers.
Fiona Dempster (UWA) shared early findings from a research project investigating investor and grower perspectives on natural capital, based on interviews with 45 investors and 60 WA growers.
Bonnie Jupp & Tibby Tuckett (Perth NRM) introduced natural capital accounting, detailing how farmers can assess, manage, and benefit from measuring and improving their natural capital.
Louise Edmonds (Carbon Sync) gave a no-nonsense look at soil carbon farming—what’s required, how it works (and doesn’t), and what to consider before signing up.
