Following this we looked at Safflower which had all attendees intrigued. Caroline Ashby, Farmer, Mother and Ironman athlete attended to present to the women for the afternoon session, “To dream, believe, achieve, remain resilient and grateful for everything you have and remember no matter what your circumstances and that "Anything is possible". Her presentation was very motivational and was well received. We had a special afternoon tea courtesy of Tarts & Co for the women, which allowed them to relax and unwind due to having a bouncy castle to keep the kids well entertained. Harmohinder Dhammu from DPIRD discussed broadleaf weed control in chickpea. Efficacy of new and old herbicides and herbicide mixtures on wild radish/canola and crop safety on chickpea. Our highlight of the day was Prof Kadambot Siddique from UWA talking about pulses in farming systems. The group then progressed through the Canola NVT trials and heard from the local industry specialists about the new varieties. Prof Wallace Cowling discussed Canola Breeding and heat tolerance. Again, t chickpeas with Stacey Power from DPIRD and “Tips and tricks for chickpeas” plus NVT/best practice management of chickpeas and look at new varieties. We had a “Early bird paddock walk” with Smyth Agri Services to look at Potash Rates in a nutrition trial. Matt Willis- Market Development Agronomist, at Bayer Crop Science introduced Mateno Complete – a new herbicide from Bayer. A comparison of products for pre-emergent and early post-emergent control of annual ryegrass in wheat. Wheat and Barley National Variety Trials were assessed and discussed with the specialists from the region. Steve Pettenon and Murray McCartney from FMC discussed pre-emergent crop safety and efficacy, broad leaf, and ryegrass in wheat on sandplain country at their trial site. Doug Hamilton discussed and illustrated in the paddock the workings of “CSBP Detect” a real-time nitrogen recommendation service that uses spectroscopy and machine learning to deliver actionable results to growers for faster and more informed decisions throughout the season. Knowing a crop’s nitrogen status at various sample locations allows growers to maximise their grain yield potential and quality for different rainfall scenarios. Lupin NVT sites and Canola variety demonstration sites were visited with specialists on hand to discuss the potential and outcomes with the farmers. Bevan Addison from Adama talked about Ultro Herbicide for grass/weed control in lupins. Caroline Ashby, Farmer, Mother and Ironman athlete attended to present to the women for the afternoon session, “To dream, believe, achieve, remain resilient and grateful for everything you have and remember no matter what your circumstances and that "Anything is possible". Her presentation was very motivational and was well received. We had a special afternoon tea courtesy of Tarts & Co for the women, which allowed them to relax and unwind due to having a bouncy castle to keep the kids well entertained. Harmohinder Dhammu from DPIRD discussed broadleaf weed control in chickpea. Efficacy of new and old herbicides and herbicide mixtures on wild radish/canola and crop safety on chickpea. Our highlight of the day was Prof Kadambot Siddique from UWA talking about pulses in farming systems. The group then progressed through the Canola NVT trials and heard from the local industry specialists about the new varieties. Prof Wallace Cowling discussed Canola Breeding and heat tolerance. Again, t chickpeas with Stacey Power from DPIRD and “Tips and tricks for chickpeas” plus NVT/best practice management of chickpeas and look at new varieties. We had a “Early bird paddock walk” with Smyth Agri Services to look at Potash Rates in a nutrition trial. Matt Willis- Market Development Agronomist, at Bayer Crop Science introduced Mateno Complete – a new herbicide from Bayer. A comparison of products for pre-emergent and early post-emergent control of annual ryegrass in wheat. Wheat and Barley National Variety Trials were assessed and discussed with the specialists from the region. Steve Pettenon and Murray McCartney from FMC discussed pre-emergent crop safety and efficacy, broad leaf, and ryegrass in wheat on sandplain country at their trial site. Doug Hamilton discussed and illustrated in the paddock the workings of “CSBP Detect” a real-time nitrogen recommendation service that uses spectroscopy and machine learning to deliver actionable results to growers for faster and more informed decisions throughout the season. Knowing a crop’s nitrogen status at various sample locations allows growers to maximise their grain yield potential and quality for different rainfall scenarios. Lupin NVT sites and Canola variety demonstration sites were visited with specialists on hand to discuss the potential and outcomes with the farmers. Trials will also demonstrate how harvest choices (represented by stubble vs bare soil) and weather conditions impact fallow water stored for the subsequent growing season and can be combined with sowing depth decisions to enhance sowing opportunities. Five soybean cultivars will be sown in spring into a field that was in either wheat or barley, or pasture in the previous year. The replicated trial will allow growers to visually assess the growth and development of spring-sown summer soybean in a heavy soil that suits soybean better in the Northern Agricultural Region of WA. Demand for Western Australian grain legumes is forecast to significantly increase domestic and international demand. However, grain legumes currently contribute in a small and diminishing way to the profitability of Western Australian farming systems. The diamondback moth (DBM) caterpillar is a serious pest of brassicas that is difficult to control. They are a problematic in certain seasons and although crops like canola can tolerate considerable leaf damage, severe infestations can cause complete defoliation and yield losses of up to 80 per cent. MIG has provided skilled service delivery of important data collection towards diamondback moth research. MIG has also assisted monitoring for other pests including budworm and fall armyworm. The latest pest identification workshop was hosted by Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) and University of Western Australian (UWA) researcher/entomologist Amber Balfour-Cunningham and focused on identification of common natural enemies in broadacre grain crops. Our workshop/field day events provided an opportunity to upskill landholders to undertake integrated pest management confidently by providing new skills via the pest identification workshop and distributing additional resources. Landholders will have an increased capacity to correctly identify common pest and beneficial species and undertake best-practice methods of pest control in broadacre agriculture. Landholder ‘identification and monitoring field kits’ were developed and provided to attendees to assist with implementing these skills on-farm. During the workshop, Amber introduced how to use the contents of the kits to aid the DPIRD and landholders in identifying crop pests and beneficial bugs. As a result of the project, landholders have an increased capacity to correctly identify common pest species, their damage and undertake best-practice methods of pest control in broadacre agriculture thus preserving natural biodiversity in our region. In addition, the increased skills and awareness of landholders to identify known pests and beneficial insects will not only benefit local biodiversity but will aid in preserving the states agricultural industry by protecting biosecurity. The IPM resources hub located on the Mingenew-Irwin Group website will help build on landholders current knowledge of agricultural pests and beneficial insects. Funded by COGGO (Council of Grain Grower Organisation Ltd), MIG is investigating and demonstrating the principles of biobeds for use on Australian farms. The project aims to find a solution to containing chemical residue remaining in spray tanks after pesticide application to reduce risk of soil and water contamination. MIG will promote project activities and findings around the concept, design, and effectiveness of biobeds in an Australian farming environment. A broader understanding of how farming practices influence populations and breeding cycles is important to ensure survival and resilience of dung beetles at a local level. Supported by the State NRM Program through a Community Stewardship Grant MIG will work with local farmers and students from the Morawa Agriculture School. The Project will use field experiments to assess the effect broadacre crop seeding may have on dung beetle populations. Specifically, assessing if seeding is having a detrimental effect on the brood balls below ground in different soil types. Results of the trial will contribute to the knowledgebase of managing dung beetle populations and be shared though networks created through the National MLA Dung Beetle Ecosystem Engineers Project. With funding from a State NRM Community Stewardship Grant this Project aims to increase community awareness of current river morphology and the effect of sediment loads and sediment movement. MIG will work with the WA Department of Water to collect baseline data on current sediment dynamics and movement after individual weather events and over the course of the season. Project promotion aims to raise community awareness of the present condition of the Irwin River and inspire action towards restoration and protection. The key objectives are to fill seasonal and geographic gaps in the distribution of dung beetles across Southern Australia and to quantify the benefits dung beetles provide for primary producers MIG is a member of the Project Steering Committee and has been heavily involved in local on-ground research, distribution, and monitoring. We will develop extension materials suited to our region and farmers that relate research and BMP to their own soil data/regional situation. By using data from the area to illustrate and highlight what issues or limiting factors are impacting farmers and ways that these issues may be remediated; we will better assist understanding and willingness to uptake improved management of soil. We will resample at demonstration sites to highlight changes with various remediation activities and also compare sites on each farm to illustrate the variances and data interpretation differences.
